SERENA THROUGH

Serena Williams has defeated Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the third round of the women’s tennis singles tournament of London Olympics. Serena literally thrashed Zvonareva. The Russian player was able to win only one game in the whole match. Such was the dominance of Serena in the match. The way she is playing at the moment, it would be very hard for any other player to stop her from winning the gold medal. Serena took just 51 minutes to defeat Zvonareva. She won the match by 6-1, 6-0. Zvonareva was helpless against the powerful groundstrokes of Serena. The American superstar fired 12 aces in the match.

Serena was in aggressive mood right from the outset. She broke the service of Zvonareva in the very first game of the first set to take a lead of 1-0. Both the players held their service in the next three games and the score was 3-1. In the fifth game, Serena got a break through again and then she held her service in the next game by firing three aces consecutively. The scorecard was showing 5-1 and Zvonareva had to hold her service in the seventh game to extend the set. She took a lead of 40-0 in the seventh game and it seemed that she would extend the set a bit. But, Serena came back and broke her service to win the first set by 6-1. In the second set, Serena was even more aggressive. She broke Zvonareva’s service thrice and won six games consecutively to wrap up the match.

In the post match press conference, Serena said that she was a bit nervous before the start of the match because she didn’t have a good practice session. As per Serena, she is pretty happy that everything went all right in the match and she is in the final 8 now. In the quarter final, Serena will play against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
