SERENA THROUGH

Serena Williams has defeated Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the third round of the women’s tennis singles tournament of London Olympics. Serena literally thrashed Zvonareva. The Russian player was able to win only one game in the whole match. Such was the dominance of Serena in the match. The way she is playing at the moment, it would be very hard for any other player to stop her from winning the gold medal. Serena took just 51 minutes to defeat Zvonareva. She won the match by 6-1, 6-0. Zvonareva was helpless against the powerful groundstrokes of Serena. The American superstar fired 12 aces in the match.

Serena was in aggressive mood right from the outset. She broke the service of Zvonareva in the very first game of the first set to take a lead of 1-0. Both the players held their service in the next three games and the score was 3-1. In the fifth game, Serena got a break through again and then she held her service in the next game by firing three aces consecutively. The scorecard was showing 5-1 and Zvonareva had to hold her service in the seventh game to extend the set. She took a lead of 40-0 in the seventh game and it seemed that she would extend the set a bit. But, Serena came back and broke her service to win the first set by 6-1. In the second set, Serena was even more aggressive. She broke Zvonareva’s service thrice and won six games consecutively to wrap up the match.

In the post match press conference, Serena said that she was a bit nervous before the start of the match because she didn’t have a good practice session. As per Serena, she is pretty happy that everything went all right in the match and she is in the final 8 now. In the quarter final, Serena will play against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

Stanford Classic AGAIN

American Tennis star, Serena Williams, has defeated Coco Vandeweghe of her own country by 7-5 6-3 and won the Stanford classic title again. Vandeweghe had reached to the finals of a WTA tournament for the first time. The experience of Serena Williams was enough to go through the young Vandeweghe. Vandeweghe made a lot of errors in the match which eventually cost her the match.

Serena has been in fine form in the last few days. She won the Wimbledon Championship just a few days ago. After returning from England, she has been struggling a lot with jet lag, but even after that, she performed brilliantly in this tournament. The recent form of Williams has made her the favourite for the London Olympics. Serena is yet to win a singles title in the Olympics. However, she has won the doubles title in the Olympics for two times by playing with her sister Venus Williams.

On being asked about her preparations for the Olympic, Serena said that she has been struggling with his back problem in the last few days. So, she would like to take rest before going into the Olympics. Serena had to play a match for Washington Kastles on 21st of July, but, she decided to keep herself out of that match. As per Serena, it would have been so nice to go to Washington DC and play, but, at the same time she should take care of her body as she has to represent her country in the Olympics. So, she decided to stay out of the match. As per Serena, She would not play in any tournament before going into the Olympics. She said that taking rest for a few days would make him fit and refreshed. She said that if she wins the singles title in the Olympics, it would be the best moment of her life.

Serena Williams wants Career Golden Slam

Having recently won her 5th title at Wimbledon and the 14th Grand Slam title of her career in singles, Serena Williams could have taken some much needed time off from the game as she look ahead to heading back to the All England Club for the London Olympic Games.

Serena, who has won the Gold Medal at the Olympic Games twice in doubles with her elder sister Venus, once in 2000 at Sydney and again in 2008 in Beijing, is looking forward to the singles event this time around with doubts over the fitness of her sister and to complete the coveted Career Golden Slam as well.

Only the legendary Steffi Graf has a Career Golden Slam in women’s tennis and for Serena, who grew up in the 90s idolizing the German phenomenon, emulating her idol might just be the greatest achievement of her career. The closest Serena Williams came to Olympic Games glory in singles competition was in 2008 when she reached the quarter final stages, but for a player of the caliber of Williams, it simply isn’t good enough. Serena Williams hoping to put Australian Open behind her

Serena Williams enters the French open this year following a disappointing Australian open which saw her defeated in the fourth round by Ekaterina Makarova. Getting knocked out in the fourth round is not usually the Williams sister way as they are so often used to winning grand slams almost for fun. In truth Serena hasn’t really been on the top of her game for some time.  A strong French open is very important for the thirty year old American as it would really help bring her career back on track. The currently world number five has only one of her thirteen grand slams at the Roland Garros stadium and it represent a tournament that she has always found difficult and it has been over ten years since that single victory in Paris. Lifting the trophy this year would be well and truly be turning back the clock.

The key for Serena’s success will be to win games fast. Overpowering weaker opponents will enable to minimise the mistakes she makes when she gets tired. It is well known that  as  a game drags on the number of unforced errors increases and as she has got older this trend has become accentuated.

She needs to win quickly and stay healthy, which will help her win at a place she has struggled in the past. This will enable her to play her best tennis and avoid fatigue building up throughout a tournament so that she is fresher for the semis and the final. The French Open has never been a strong tournament for her only progressing beyond the quarter finals once. With a run of poor performances she desperately needs to find form before Wimbledon if she wants to play well on a more favourable court type.

Serena Williams still the Toughest

The tenth ranked women’s tennis player in the world Andrea Petkovic believes that 13 time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams is still the toughest player in the women’s circuit and by far the toughest player she has met in her entire career and believes that it takes a whole lot of courage, guts and stamina to get the better of the younger Williams sister in any scenario. Petkovic also believes that although she is nowhere near the top ten players in the world, Serena still has the capability to launch a comeback and breeze through to the top 10 and win a couple of Grand Slam events as well.

Although ranked 12th in the world, it will take Serena a few tournament wins before she can break the top 10 barrier once again and her quest for the top of the mountain once again begins from the Brisbane International tournament that will begin in a few days’ time at Brisbane, Australia, ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year. Serena Williams will begin the tournament seeded fourth behind Samantha Stosur, Andrea Petkovic and Francesca Schiavone and Petkovic believes that it would be foolish to write Serena off on the basis of the seed distributions.

The American last played in a WTA event in the final of the US Open where her tantrums made her extremely unpopular among her fellow professionals but Petkovic believes that the anger shown by Serena was nothing but indomitable will to win.

Petkovic went on to add that while growing up, Serena Williams was an idol for her after the retirement of Steffi Graf and she dreamed of playing against her in singles match and the way the seeded players are lined up in the tournament, that dream of hers might become a reality once again.
